30 Before 30

This list is composed of big and small goals I want to accomplish before I turn 30 on October 3, 2015. The list isn’t a commitment, and I won’t use it to chastise myself about things left undone. Its purpose is to inspire me to continue learning and growing and to prevent me from being complacent. I will turn 30 5 years after making this list and know that my interests may change, so the list may become more or less specific, and things I no longer have interest in doing may disappear to make way for new aspirations.

In no particular order, I present my 30 Before 30 list.

  1. Learn to sew and wear something I made in public
  2. Go on a big vacation (like to New York, California, Europe, Central America…)
  3. Become a mother
  4. Run a 5K
  5. Find a trustworthy veggie burger recipe
  6. Develop a side business Completed 10/31/11 (Visit my Norwex site here!)
  7. Make mozzarella cheese
  8. Watch Dexter’s top 7 favorite movies without multitasking
  9. Compile a cookbook of at least 100 favorite recipes
  10. Complete Dave Ramsey’s Baby Step 2: Pay off all debt except my mortgage
  11. Complete Dave Ramsey’s Baby Step 3: Save 6 months of expenses
  12. Re-learn Spanish well enough to hold a normal conversation
  13. Take (couples) dance lessons (of any kind)
  14. Read (at least) 60 books (1 book a month for 5 years)
  15. Do a blog giveaway Completed 12/12/10
  16. Memorize 120 verses (2 verses a month for 5 years)
  17. Make sushi
  18. Take a cake decorating class
  19. Take good pictures with a nice camera (Completed, but ongoing!)
  20. Cook and eat something with fish (canned tuna doesn’t count)

  22. Learn 5 ways to do long hair
  23. Knit legwarmers
  24. Write to our Compassion child on a regular basis
  25. Get a tattoo…I think
  26. Brew beer (with Dexter)
  27. Make bagels
  28. Keep my kitchen table cleared off every day for a month

  2. What a great list! We have many shared interests. I play the piano only passably well. I wish I’d learned to play the guitar when I had more time. Would have been so fun when i taught! I also have a soft spot in my heart for immigrants — I taught in LA for 7 years. I’m trying to learn to sew right now. I took a class in grad school to learn photoshop and illustrator. The class was quick and I learned tons. My sister did the classroom in a book thing. I have an awesome black bean burger recipe (it does have an egg, so it’s not vegan) — I’ll be posting it one of these meatless Mondays. Good luck reading the Bible in 90 days — that Old Testament can be pretty slow-going.

  3. What fun! I love your list! Even the things that I wouldn’t put on my own (like making sushi) are very INTERESTING goals. My own birthday list was kind of a “retrospective”. But now you’ve motivated me to set goals for myself. But I don’t want to have to do 60 by 60. Maybe 1 a year? I’ll get back to you. I hope you’ll keep us updated on your progress! Love you!

  4. Great list! I’ve been realizing I’m not going to make all my “goals” but it’s been nice having something to keep me on track. Keep us posted on how things go!

  5. Great list Mrs. D. I don’t know about reading the bible in 90 days though. That’s some serious word pouring. By creating the future in this way, I’m certain you’ll do every one of them.

  9. I have been searching wordpress to find others who are doing a 30 before 30 like me. I only heard of the idea recently and will be 30 next November so my time is limited. I enjoyed your list and wish you good luck. I’ll keep up with your journey and hope you will check out mine as well. Perhaps not as ambitious as some of your goals, but I think my list will make for a fun year. Good luck!

  10. I just found your blog via freshly pressed, and I really like it, especially this list. So many of your things are things that I’d like to do as well, but you’ve laid it out so well. I think that by being intentional about what we hope to do, we’re more likely to accomplish it. Great job!

P.S. I also enjoyed looking at your book list. I think you’ll love Three Cups of Tea.

  12. Ahhh! I turn 30 in 2012, as in next year. I love the Dave Ramsey thing. Also I got pregnant when I was your age, so that could have been on my list too. I hope you reach all your goals!

    • Thanks! I keep telling myself that I still have about 4.5 years and that’s plenty of time…but sometimes I get a little crazy about some of these goals!

  14. I like your idea for a 30 before 30 list. I’m inspired to do the same on my blog. Unfortunately my list would have to be much smaller goals since I’ve only got about 7 months before 30…

  15. Dear Mrs Dexter
Congratulations on setting your goals. I applaud you for that, but please, please if you are going to go vegan, even for a month, please take iron, vitamin and omega-3 supplements.

I appreciate the ethics and I don’t mean to offend, but my sister didn’t have a good experience with a vegan diet.

    Thanks for your blog!
